MPs debate Statoil

Norwegian MPs have questioned the viability of Statoil`s dominant position on the Norwegian continental shelf and called for a detailed assessment of how the company`s dominant position is exercised.

The debate comes as the supply industry claims that the cost reductions obtained by Statoil recently are by and large the product of inappropriate pressure by a dominant actor for the supplier to cut costs below operating expenses.

CEO of the Norwegian Shipowners' Association, Mr. Sturla Henriksen, says that the debate is vital as Statoil's position on the shelf has consequenses for resource management, employment, industry structure, technology and public revenue. The NSA welcomes and support a thorough assesment as called for by cross party MPs.

An assessment would also have to consider if the ownership of Statoil should be transferred from the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries.
